J-1 Minimum Funding Requirements:

In order to sponsor a J-1 Exchange Visitor, a minimum funding amount must be met. The current financial support guidelines for start dates as late as June 30, 2024 are as follows:

For principal J-1 Exchange Visitor: $2770/month.

For spouse: $583/month

For children: $415/month per child

For all requests with a July 1, 2024 start date or later, the new J-1 minimum funding requirements are as follows:

For principal J-1 Exchange Visitor: $2868/month.

For spouse: $604/month

For children: $431/month per child

Guidelines for funding documentation:

Brown funding:

Brown appointment letter.  If the Faculty host/supervisor will be providing funding that is not covered under the appointment, an additional letter from the Faculty Host outlining the amount and parameters of the additional funding must be included.

Hospital Host:

Hire letter or invitation letter that states salary/amount of the funding.

An outside official funding source:

For any type of award, fellowship, university funding, etc. an official letter from the awarding entity must be provided which shows the amount the person will be receiving.  If the funding letter shows a date range for the funding to be applied, we can only apply the funding to that time period and supplemental funding will have to be provided to cover any gaps between the funding duration and appointment duration.  An English translation is required if the documentation is not already in English.

Personal funds:

Personal funds can be accepted as either salary from the home employer or personal bank statements. We only accept personal bank statements when no other funding source will be used and/or to supplement any official funding source. An English translation is required if the documentation is not already in English.

Salary: If a scholar will continue to receive their salary while at Brown, this needs to be captured.  As documentation, we accept salary/employment confirmation letters.  The letter must explicitly say that the salary will be paid throughout the duration of the Brown appointment.

Bank Statements: We accept personal bank statements that meet the criteria below.

  • The statement must show:
    • bank name
    • name of account holder
    • date of statement/screenshot
    • type of account
    • account balance
  • Account must be liquid.  We do not accept investment accounts or credit accounts.
  • Bank statement must be less than 6 months old from the anticipated start date.
  • The account(s) must be in the Scholar’s name.  For VRFs or Student Interns, it is acceptable that it be in a parent’s name with an affidavit of support*.  An account in anyone else’s name requires a review for exception to policy.

*What is acceptable as an affidavit of support?   We accept official/certified bank letters or a memo/letter from the account holder stating their relation to the scholar and that they affirm financial support for the scholar for the duration of the Brown appointment at no less than the J-1 funding minimum requirement.
