B-1/Visa Waiver for Business
About B-1 / Visa Waiver Business Visitors
Persons coming to Brown for short-term business visits may be able to enter the U.S. under the B-1 (or B-1/B-2) visitors visa. Some travelers may be eligible to make business visits under the Visa Waiver Program, which allows for ‘visa-free’ travel to the U.S.
- Appropriate use: The B-1 visa (and the Visa Waiver Program) allow for short-term visits to the U.S. In the academic context, examples of business visits include participating in an academic conference or festival, meeting with faculty, or engaging in business-related talks or negotiations. These classifications do not permit employment or formal academic study.
- Duration: B-1 visitors are allowed to enter for the length of the intended business trip. Visa Waiver Program visitors are typically allowed to enter for non-extendable stays up to 90 days.
- Allowed Payments: Visitors coming for academic purposes may be reimbursed for reasonable travel costs. B-1 and VWB (Visa Waiver - Business) visitors may be eligible for honoraria payment under limited circumstances. Contact the Foreign National Tax Office for more information about honoraria or otheIr types of payments to foreign national visitors.
