Lost or Stolen Travel Documents

What to do if your immigration and travel documents are lost or stolen.

It is important to take immediate steps in case any of your essential immigration and travel documents are lost or stolen. Your ability to return to the U.S. may be directly impacted if you do not have valid documents for re-entry.

In all cases, report your situation to ISSS at oisss@brown.edu with any details you can provide. Read below for additional information about specific document types.

Travel Document

Steps to Take

Lost or Stolen Passport
  • File a report with the local police agency in your area and get a copy of the police report
  • Contact your country's nearest consulate, embassy, or passport agency for a replacement passport (or emergency travel document, if possible)
  • Read below for instructions if your passport also contained your entry visa
Lost Entry Visa
  • If your passport contained your entry visa, report the lost / stolen visa to the U.S. consulate that issued the visa, following instructions provided by the U.S. State Department.
    • NOTE: if your passport is found or recovered after it was reported as lost or stolen, the visa inside the passport will no longer be valid and must be replaced before returning to the U.S.
  • If you are outside the U.S., apply for a new visa at your local U.S. consulate. You will not be able to re-enter the U.S. until you obtain a new entry visa.
  • If you are inside the U.S., consult ISSS. If you leave the U.S. in the future, you will need to get a new visa before returning to the U.S.
  • Read our Renewing Your Visa page for more details about applying for a new visa.
Lost or Stolen Form I-20, DS-2019 or I-797A Approval Notice
  • Contact ISSS at oisss@brown.edu (or your J-1 sponsor, if your DS-2019 was issued by another sponsor).
  • F-1 / J-1 students: submit a request for a replacement document through the OISSS Gateway; persons in other visa classifications should email ISSS for detailed instructions.
  • Other employees (e.g., H-1B, O-1): contact ISSS.
Employment Authorization Document (EAD) Card
  • Apply for a replacement EAD card by filing Form I-765 with USCIS
  • Discuss replacement procedures with your ISSS advisor
