About TN Status
TN Professional status is available to citizens of Canada or Mexico seeking temporary admission into the U.S. in order to engage in “pre-arranged business activities at a professional level.” Only citizens of Canada and Mexico are eligible for TN status. General information is available from the U.S. State Department.
- To qualify as a TN professional, the individual must belong to a profession or professions listed in Chapter 16, Appendix 2 of the US / Mexico / Canada (USMCA) trade agreement (previously NAFTA). TN professions frequently used in higher education include college or university teachers, scientists (various disciplines), and certain medical or health professionals. The professional must have the required educational and/or licensing requirements associated with the TN profession.
- TN status is granted for the intended length of the business activity, up to three years. TN status may be renewed in increments of a maximum of three years, and there is no limit on the number of possible extensions.
- TN status is a non-immigrant classification and TN professionals are expected to maintain a residence in their respective country of citizenship.
