Local and Domestic Travel

Information about traveling in the local area or within the United States

Local Travel in the Providence Area

Carry the following documents when traveling locally in Providence (or your city of residence), even while on your daily commute. While not always convenient, USCIS regulations requires you to carry proof of identity and proof of lawful admission (your Form I-94) at all times. You do not need to carry original documents, but you should have access to print or electronic copies stored in a secure location.

  • A copy of your most recent Form I-94 admission record (not your travel history) showing your current status (e.g., F-1, J-1, H-1B, etc.) and admit until date, such as D/S for F and J students and scholars, or an unexpired date into the future for H-1Bs and other classifications
  • A copy of your government ID (e.g., passport identity page) establishing your identity
  • A copy of your Form I-20 (F-1), DS-2019 (J-1), or I-797A approval notice (H-1B, O-1, etc.)
  • If you are on post-completion Optional Practical Training or STEM Extension OPT, a copy of your Employment Authorization Document (EAD) card

Domestic Travel within the United States

Carry the following documents when traveling outside of your local area but remaining within the United States. Even though you do not need to go through immigration inspection when traveling domestically, USCIS regulations requires you to carry proof of identity and proof of lawful admission (i.e., your Form I-94) at all times. Therefore, it is important to have access to your original documents in case you are asked to verify your immigration status at any time, such as at an immigration checkpoint or stop. In addition,

  • A copy of your most recent Form I-94 admission record (not your travel history) showing your current status (e.g., F-1, J-1, H-1B, etc.) and unexpired “admit until” date, such as D/S for F and J students and scholars, or a date into the future for H-1Bs and other visa classifications
  • Your unexpired passport
  • Your Form I-20 (F-1), DS-2019 (J-1), or I-797A approval notice (H-1B, O-1, etc.)
  • Proof of full-time enrollment (for current students) or appointment letter (for current scholars)
  • If you are on post-completion Optional Practical Training or STEM Extension OPT, your Employment Authorization Document (EAD) card and proof of employment, such as a letter from your employer

Travel to Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands are considered domestic U.S. travel, but be careful that your travel does not require you to stop in or transit through another country in the Caribbean.
