If you are already in the U.S. as an F-1 student at another institution, but are now planning on coming to Brown, you may need to follow the process for transferring your F-1 SEVIS record and I-20 to Brown. In general, you must always have a Form I-20 from the school you will be attending as a full-time student.
Eligibility Criteria. To be eligible to transfer your F-1 SEVIS record and I-20 to Brown, you must meet the following eligibility criteria:
- You must currently be in valid F-1 status and your F-1 SEVIS record must in be in active status (contact us if your SEVIS record is no longer in active status)
- You must have been fully admitted to a full-time program at Brown, and have sufficient financial resources to meet the cost of attendance
- The gap between the last day of attendance at your current school (or the last day of post-completion Optional Practical Training) and the first day of your Brown program can be no more than five (5) months
Transfer Procedures: If you meet the eligibility criteria above, you should take the following steps.
- Notify a Designated School Official (international student advisor) at your current institution that you plan to attend Brown. You current advisor will review your eligibility to transfer your record and work with you to identify a SEVIS transfer release date. This is the date that the SEVIS record will become available to Brown. Brown cannot produce a new transfer I-20 for you until the record has been released to Brown.
- To facilitate the transfer, your DSO may ask for Brown's school code, which is BOS214F20089000.
- Once Brown receives the SEVIS record from your school, we can start processing a new I-20 for you. Please keep in mind that once the record is transferred to Brown, you may no longer continue working under your previous school's I-20.
- Consult ISSS if you plan to travel internationally before starting your Brown program.
